Hi friends! We wanted to take a moment and take you behind the scenes in the Dominican Republic.
This. Is. Us. From left to right: Kara, Margarita, Ybane, Francisco and Carina.
We’re based in a small town called La Descubierta in remote corner of the Southwest Dominican Republic, not far from the border with Haiti. There, three days per week, you can find us on our back patio creating handmade jewelry under the shade of mango trees, swatting away mosquitos as we hammer and shape and bend, bead, polish and package until we’ve created a beautiful finished product ready to be sent to your door step.
We are 2 Dominicans, 2 Haitians and 1 North American. 3 of us are mamas, 2 of us are students and all of us believe that the future is female. Through sweat and tears and laughs, we’ve spent the last 7 years together believing in our souls that everyone deserves the opportunity to earn an income in a dignified workplace. And that women, especially, hold the keys to breaking the cycle of poverty and building a brighter tomorrow for future generations.
Each team member has a specialty: Ybane is Mama Bear of the tribe - always offering a word of encouragement and dropping gold nuggets of hard- earned wisdom. Carina is sassy and tough, and an expert in our popular Sparkly Beaded Hoops. Margarita is soft-spoken and calm and learns new designs in a flash. Francisco keeps tabs on materials and inventory, and he recently graduated to become a paid artisan! He’s the only team member who has mastered our hand- stamped manta bracelets launching later this month(!!). And I (Kara) handle the multi- faceted logistics of running an international, mission- driven company.
So that is a little about us, now us about you? How did you hear about Madres? And more importantly, when are you coming to visit us? Comment below!
